Science@OC is currently seeking volunteers to support the Robotics Tournaments at Tustin Unified on Saturday, Jan 27th, 2018.
Volunteer Opportunities
- Robot Inspectors: Conduct inspections of robots to verify machines conform to specifications and requirements. All inspectors must read and understand the rules pertaining to robots before the competition. The time commitment is 7:15 am to 9:15 am the morning of a tournament.
- Lead Judge is responsible for coordinating and supporting the judging process. All judges must read and understand the judging criteria, rubrics, and engineering design process documentation in engineering notebooks. The time commitment is 7:45 am to approximately 2:00 pm. Judges are welcome to stay to hand out the awards at the end of the tournament.
- Judges visit several teams and conduct interviews and complete rubrics. Judges will deliberate to come to consensus on the teams who will be given awards. All judges must read and understand the judging criteria, rubrics, and engineering design process documentation in engineering notebooks. The time commitment is 7:45 am to approximately 2:00 pm. Judges are welcome to stay to hand out the awards at the end of the tournament.
- Head Referees oversee all referees and fills in when needed. The head referee will make all final decisions and will help coordinate the scores entered in the tournament software system using an iPad. The time commitment is 8:30 am to approximately 5:00 pm but can be split among several volunteers.
- Referees run each field and score every other match. The most important role of the referee is to correctly interpret and consistently enforce the rules of the game to score the match upon completion. They must also oversees that fields are properly reset for each match, checks that teams are placed correctly at the field and prepares them to compete. The time commitment is a 4 hour shift in the morning or afternoon, 8:30-12:30, 12:30pm-5pm.
